World Urban Café JAM Sessions
Dear all,
Hope the email finds all with you is well.
I'm writing to say that LEAD-China was urgently requested by LEAD Int'l and UN Habitat JAM to organize a consultation meeting (called WUC -- World Urban Café) discussing urban issues, for which its results will be inputted onto the upcoming on-line dialogue. I also attached background about WUC below.
The event with the topics of Sustainable Access to Water in Our Cities and Environmental Sustainability in Our Cities will happen at 9:00 am, Dec.3 (Sat.) at Conference Hall, the 3rd floor, Beijing Dangdai Service Center (Changqiao). It's not only for academia points sharing about urban issues but also a good opportunity to bring all fellows of LEAD-China together. Your attendance with your colleagues or freinds or family is welcome. Sorry for the short notice.
Looking forward to seeing you all there.
Regards,
Chengbo

World Urban Café JAM Sessions
The internet can often be a place for individuals to get together, yet not necessarily represent the collective will of communities. For this reason HABITAT JAM has created community based consultation format that can happen in real time, face to face, or in a virtual community, called the World Urban Café JAM Sessions.
A World Urban Café JAM Session (Café JAM) is about communities getting together. There are currently JAMs happening around the world leading up to and at the HABITAT JAM: Columbia, India, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria to name but a few. The idea is that these JAM Sessions be held pre or during the JAM event. There are two café formats: event based and internet based.
Café Events
For an event based format the café would be a mix of inspiration music or other art form combined with a consultation. The consultation methodology would fit the audience being engaged - for example, the consultation methods would be different if we were engaging a concert of 500 people, versus a small gathering of 50. Please contact Claire@eya.ca for more information.
The World Urban Cafe (WUC) is intended to gather views of a range of stakeholders that can then be posted into the online dialogue of the JAM. Habitat now want LEAD to organise (at very short notice) a gathering of Fellows or members of the LEAD China network to discuss one or a number of the key themes as described below:
- Improving the Lives of People Living in Slums
- Sustainable Access to Water in Our Cities * Environmental Sustainability in Our Cities
- Safety and Security in Our Cities
- Finance and Governance in Our Cities
- Humanity: The Future of Our Cities
The input from China is especially important given that the next World Urban Forum (2008) will take place in Beijing. Habitat are seriously looking to LEAD China to help out in a difficult situation.
The end goals of a Café event are:
- to have fun and be engaged
- for participants to learn more about urban issues
- for organizers to gather data related to the themes of the World Urban Forum
The outputs of the Café events will be a:
- report on the findings of the Café
- an established network that will be engaged leading up to and possibly at the WUF
The outcome of the Café will be:
- greater understanding of urban issues
- a larger community of youth linked through the World Urban Forum on youth issues
